Aftershocks Rattle Southern Spain After 5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Off Almería Coast

Authorities are assessing structural damage at Almería Airport following a 5.5-magnitude offshore quake that prompted safety alerts across more than 50 towns.

Overview

  • Spain’s National Geographic Institute recorded the quake at 7:13 a.m. local time at a depth of two kilometres off the coast of Almería.
  • Tremors were felt in over 50 towns across Andalucía and eastern provinces, including Granada, Málaga, Jaén, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete.
  • Emergency services logged more than 25 calls from shaken residents, a mobile alert warned of hazards and a brief tsunami warning was issued before being lifted.
  • Parts of the departure lounge roof at Almería Airport collapsed and the ceiling of a Toyota showroom in Huércal de Almería suffered damage.
  • Aftershocks measuring between 1.9 and 3.4 in magnitude have followed the main tremor and no injuries have been reported.
