Aftershock Hits Bangladesh as Quake Death Toll Rises to 10

Officials report hundreds injured with assessments ongoing after a shallow quake near Narsingdi shook Dhaka.

  • A 3.3-magnitude aftershock was recorded Saturday morning in Ashulia just north of Dhaka, the national meteorological service reported.
  • Authorities reported structural damage in the capital and surrounding areas, fires including at a power facility were controlled, and several victims were hit by falling masonry and railings from buildings.
  • The government activated its emergency operations center and deployed responders as interim leader Muhammad Yunus urged the public to remain calm; strong tremors were felt in Kolkata and parts of Northeast India without major damage reported there.
