After Washington Park Police Shooting, Anthony Nelson Charged and Ordered Held

COPA is reviewing body-camera footage in the case.

Overview

  • Police say officers tried to stop Nelson around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday in the 5600 block of South Michigan Avenue, leading to a foot chase and an officer firing, striking him in the abdomen and arm.
  • Nelson, 25, faces felony counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer and possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, and a judge ordered him to pretrial detention with his next court date set for Nov. 26.
  • The officer involved has been placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days, and was taken to a hospital for observation, while Nelson was treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center and reported in good condition.
  • A police report says surveilling officers noted a heavily weighted crossbody bag, and during the chase Nelson retrieved an object consistent with a firearm before an officer fired; a fully loaded handgun was recovered.
  • Nelson’s family disputes parts of the police account and held a news conference outside the Leighton Criminal Court Building to press for answers about why he was shot.
