After Judge’s Order, Trump Administration Restores Nearly All UCLA NIH Grants

The judge’s injunction extends to Defense and Transportation grants, with the government requesting an October 10 deadline.

Overview

  • Justice Department attorneys told the court that NIH has reinstated all but nine of roughly 500 UCLA health science grants following Judge Rita Lin’s order.
  • The National Science Foundation previously restored about 300 UCLA awards in August under a separate court directive.
  • Judge Lin’s latest injunction covers Department of Defense and Transportation funding for UC researchers, and government lawyers asked to complete Defense restorations by October 10, saying all terminated defense grants will return.
  • The July freeze cut off more than $500 million across about 800 UCLA projects that fund work ranging from drug development and dementia research to rural heart disease and robotics education.
  • Separately, the administration is pressing settlement demands of about $1.2 billion against UC, which a faculty and staff coalition has sued to halt.
