After BBB 26 Seizure, Doctors Stress the 5-Minute Rule for Calling SAMU

A convulsion that reaches five minutes marks a medical emergency with high risk of brain injury.

Overview

  • Call SAMU (192) if an active seizure hits five minutes or if episodes repeat without the person regaining consciousness.
  • Seek urgent care for breathing trouble or bluish lips, a severe head blow during the fall, or failure to wake after the event.
  • Avoid putting fingers or objects in the mouth, restraining movements, giving drinks or pills, or moving the person unless there is immediate danger.
  • Protect the head, clear nearby hazards, turn the person onto their side once convulsions stop, and time the episode to report its duration to responders.
  • Triggers can include sleep deprivation, intense exertion, fever, dehydration, hypoglycemia or substances, and any first seizure warrants prompt medical evaluation.
