AFSPA Extended Statewide in Manipur, Excluding 13 Police Station Areas

The Ministry of Home Affairs has renewed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act for six months in Manipur, Nagaland, and parts of Arunachal Pradesh, citing ongoing ethnic violence and security challenges.

  • The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been extended across all of Manipur, except for 13 police station areas, for six months starting April 1, 2025.
  • AFSPA was also renewed in eight districts and 21 police station areas across Nagaland, as well as specific districts and police station areas in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The law grants sweeping powers to security forces in 'disturbed areas,' including the authority to search, arrest, and use force without prior judicial approval.
  • Manipur has been under President's rule since February 2025 following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, amid ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities that has claimed over 250 lives.
  • Recent security operations in Manipur uncovered illegal arms and ammunition, highlighting persistent instability in the region.
