AFSPA Extended Across Manipur, Excluding 13 Police Station Areas

The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in Manipur, Nagaland, and parts of Arunachal Pradesh for six months, citing ongoing security concerns.

AFSPA, often criticised as a draconian law, gives armed forces operating in disturbed areas sweeping powers to search, arrest and open fire if they deem it necessary. (PTI PHOTO)

Overview

  • The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been extended to the entire state of Manipur, except for 13 police station areas, for six months starting April 1, 2025.
  • AFSPA has also been extended in eight districts and 21 police station areas in Nagaland, as well as Tirap, Changlang, Longding, and three police station areas in Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam.
  • Manipur remains under Presidential rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh amid prolonged ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
  • Security forces in Manipur continue operations in vulnerable areas, recovering arms and ammunition to address ongoing unrest and maintain order.
  • AFSPA, in force in Manipur since the 1980s, remains a contentious law due to its sweeping powers and immunity provisions, which have drawn criticism over human rights concerns.
