AFL Acquires Waverley Park to Drive Talent Pathways and Community Footy

  • The AFL completed its purchase of Waverley Park from Hawthorn Football Club on June 24 for an undisclosed eight-figure sum well below $20 million.
  • The league plans to use the facility to bolster talent pathway programs, community football initiatives and umpire development.
  • Waverley Park is heritage listed and was home to 732 AFL/VFL matches, including 70 finals and one Grand Final between 1970 and 1999.
  • Hawthorn will relocate its training and administrative base to a new $100 million facility at the Kennedy Community Centre in Dingley later this year.
  • AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said the acquisition will help meet the league’s goal of 10 million attendees by providing two additional ovals per week for five years.
