Afghan Women’s Refugee Team to Debut at FIFA Unites Series in Dubai Oct. 23–29

FIFA's initiative gives displaced Afghan players a sanctioned stage in Dubai following the Taliban's ban on women's sport.

Overview

  • The four-team round-robin features the UAE, Chad and Libya, with all matches streamed live on FIFA+.
  • A 23-player roster will be selected by coach Pauline Hamill from about 70 refugees identified at camps in Sydney and St George’s Park.
  • The squad was created after FIFA Council approval in May as part of the three-pillar Action for Afghan Women’s Football strategy.
  • The team will play friendlies only and is not eligible to enter World Cup qualifying as Afghanistan under current arrangements.
  • The series takes place in a Type II international window and offers Chad and Libya the activity needed to enter upcoming FIFA women’s rankings.
