Opposition groups blame the Taliban, urging an Iranian investigation.

Overview

  • Sari was shot by two masked gunmen outside his Tehran office on Dec. 24 and died later in hospital, according to opposition sources and local media.
  • One of his companions was also killed and another was seriously wounded in the attack.
  • The National Resistance Front, through spokesperson Ali Maisam Nazari, accused the Taliban of orchestrating the killing.
  • Iranian authorities had not commented publicly and the Taliban had issued no response as former Afghan officials and opposition groups called for a probe.
  • Sari, a former police chief in Baghlan and Takhar who moved to Iran after 2021 to assist ex-security personnel, is the second anti-Taliban figure reported killed in Iran in recent months after Marouf Gholami in Mashhad.
