Affidavit Says Lakewood SUV Driver Reached 91 MPH Before School Bus Crash

Prosecutors are weighing a vehicular homicide charge after an 18-year-old SUV passenger died.

Overview

  • Event data from the 2015 Nissan Pathfinder showed speeds of 91–92 mph in a 40 mph zone, with braking only captured two seconds before impact.
  • Driver Andrew Logan Miller, 22, was arrested after treatment for injuries and is booked on charges including reckless vehicular assault, child abuse, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and speeding 40 mph over the limit.
  • Eighteen-year-old passenger Julio Vasquez-Gonzalez died from his injuries; sixteen people were hurt overall as the bus was struck during a left turn and several students were ejected through shattered windows.
  • The affidavit states Miller’s driver’s license had been suspended since February 2022, no one in the SUV was wearing a seat belt and some seat belts were not functional.
  • Investigators reported finding unopened alcohol containers in the SUV, and Miller told police the vehicle had removed side airbags and brake problems before consenting to a blood test.
