AFBF Survey: Thanksgiving Dinner Price Falls 5% to $55.18 as Turkey Costs Drop

Retailer bundles sharpen consumer savings despite higher prices for some vegetables.

Overview

  • The AFBF's 40th annual survey puts the classic dinner for 10 at $55.18, a 5% year-over-year decline.
  • Turkey prices fell 16.3% to $21.50 for a 16-pound bird, which represents 39% of the basket, as flocks are rebuilt and demand softens.
  • California’s average bill is $72.61, well above the $55.18 U.S. figure and the Western regional average of $61.75.
  • Item prices diverged: stuffing mix, dinner rolls and cranberries were cheaper, while sweet potatoes rose 37%, a veggie tray 61.3% and frozen peas 17.2%.
  • Retailers promoted low-cost bundles, including a Walmart basket priced at $40 and a Lidl offer at $36, even as farmers received about 15.9 cents of each food dollar in 2023.
