AFA to Run La Plata’s Estadio Único Under Works-for-Fee Deal

A masterplan targets a late March 2026 relaunch following stadium-wide upgrades.

Overview

  • Governor Axel Kicillof confirmed that the AFA will assume management of the Estadio Único Diego Armando Maradona and begin a renovation program.
  • The AFA Executive Council approved the transfer of management last week after roughly nine months of negotiations.
  • Under the agreement, AFA owes a usage fee to the province that can be offset by carrying out necessary stadium works.
  • AFA presented a four-part plan focusing on the playing surface, roof, lighting, and interior infrastructure and connectivity, with short-term works slated to start.
  • The venue is intended to host Argentina’s national teams and major domestic finals, and Boca Juniors is evaluating it as a temporary home if its Bombonera project proceeds.
