AFA Clears Marcos Rojo to Play for Estudiantes

The decision ends a last-minute registration and payment dispute, permitting the club to register him for continental and domestic competitions.

Overview

  • On Friday, October 9, 2026 the Argentine Football Association authorized Marcos Rojo to play for Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores, Copa Argentina and the Torneo Clausura.
  • Estudiantes presented Rojo the same day with a training-country video in which the 36-year-old said he was happy to return as he begins his third spell at the club.
  • To complete the move Rojo agreed to forgo money owed by Racing and the clubs negotiated exit terms that include reported contingent payments to Racing of roughly $500,000–$800,000.
  • The club pursued Rojo to cover defensive absences caused by suspensions to Leandro González Pírez and Tomás Palacios and cited Gabriel Neves’s fractured forearm when seeking an extraordinary registration slot from the AFA.
  • Rojo’s reported contract runs through December 2027, a short-term return that brings experience for the semifinal against Flamengo and gives him a chance to rebuild his relationship with some supporters.
