Overview
- An AeroMéxico Connect Embraer 190 operating Flight 1631 flew within 200 feet over Delta Flight 590 before landing on runway 5R at Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport on Monday.
- Delta Flight 590, bound for Atlanta with 144 passengers and six crew members, completed an aborted takeoff and returned to the terminal at about 60 mph before departing roughly three hours later.
- Delta Air Lines and AeroMéxico both notified Mexico’s Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board and are cooperating fully with inquiries.
- Mexican investigators are examining potential air traffic control communication lapses that may have allowed simultaneous clearance of landing and takeoff operations.
- The near-miss adds to a trend of safety incidents this year, following runway collisions and separation losses at Atlanta, Phoenix, Chicago Midway and Reagan National airports.
