Overview

  • On July 21 at Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport, an AeroMéxico Connect Embraer 190 landed on runway 5R just 200 feet in front of a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 beginning its takeoff roll.
  • The Delta crew halted the takeoff at about 60 mph with 144 passengers and six crew aboard, returned to the terminal and departed for Atlanta roughly three hours later.
  • Delta reported the near miss to Mexico’s civil aviation authority, the FAA and the NTSB and has pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
  • Investigators from Mexico’s aviation authority alongside FAA and NTSB officials are analyzing FlightRadar24 data and air traffic control communications to uncover how both aircraft received runway clearance.
  • The incident follows Mexico’s reinstatement to Category 1 safety status in 2023 and raises fresh concerns over runway operations and communication protocols.
