Aena Sets 2025 Traffic Records With Madrid on Top as Barcelona Exceeds Capacity

The surge bolsters Aena’s push for long‑planned expansions, with approvals still required to ease bottlenecks at the busiest hubs.

Overview

  • Aena reported 384.8 million passengers in 2025 (+4.2%), 3.28 million aircraft movements (+2.4%) and 1.53 million tonnes of freight (+7.9%) across its network.
  • MadridBarajas led the system with 68.18 million passengers (+3%), 430,616 flights (+2.5%) and a cargo record of 840,331 tonnes (+9.6%).
  • Barcelona–El Prat handled 57.5 million passengers (+4.4%), surpassing its 55 million theoretical capacity by shifting growth to off‑peak hours and desaisonalising, with 360,786 operations (+3.7%) and 200,741 tonnes of cargo (+10.5%).
  • Regional standouts set highs or strong gains: Málaga reached 26.76 million passengers (+7.4%); Girona returned above two million (2.19 million, +~9%); A Coruña hit 1.29 million (+4.4%); Vigo rose to 1.11 million (+5.3%) with freight up 34%; Córdoba posted a record 30,797 after new services; Granada grew to 1.15 million (+1.7%).
  • Sharp declines followed airline pullbacks: Santiago fell 14.3% to 3.12 million after Ryanair cuts, and Valladolid dropped 54.4% to about 87,500 after Ryanair’s exit; Aena says investment plans, including a multibillion‑euro El Prat expansion pending regulatory sign‑off, aim to address capacity needs.
