Aena Evicts Homeless from T4, Madrid Council Withdraws from Coordination Talks

A unilateral ban has frozen the joint census needed to rehouse airport homeless, leaving dozens still sleeping inside the complex with further displacement to the parking area despite a 150-bed emergency shelter.

Overview

  • On July 24 Aena barred overnight stays in Terminal 4 without completing the agreed census, displacing more than 400 people across other terminals
  • Madrid City Council announced it would quit weekly technical meetings in protest and accused Aena of a unilateral, inhumane decision
  • The Pinar de San José shelter opened July 14 with 150 beds but has accommodated only a fraction of those evicted from the airport
  • Government delegate Francisco Martín Aguirre reports about 50 individuals still sleep inside the airport complex and another 20 in the outdoor parking lot
  • Aena has criticized the council’s withdrawal as political activism and called for renewed institutional cooperation as homelessness and minor thefts continue in other terminals
