Overview

  • Since July 24 Aena has prohibited overnight stays across all terminals at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and is redirecting those affected to a municipal centre in Pinar de San José.
  • The emergency centre opened July 14 with 150 beds, but only 38 people who previously slept at the airport have moved in as of July 24.
  • The Madrid City Council denounced the eviction order as unilateral and will no longer attend weekly coordination meetings after learning of the ban through media reports.
  • Airport staff reported up to 50 homeless individuals sleeping in Terminals 1, 2 and 3 during the first night under the ban, indicating gradual enforcement.
  • Transport Minister Óscar Puente publicly backed Aena’s actions and highlighted that local authorities bear primary responsibility for homelessness services under Spanish law.
