Aemet Will Name High-Impact DANAs Starting 2025–26, Beginning With ‘Alice’

The change targets clearer risk communication by applying names only when forecasts call for orange or red warnings.

Overview

  • Spain’s meteorological agency announced the policy on October 6 for the 2025–2026 season.
  • Only high-impact systems expected to trigger orange or red alerts will receive names.
  • The 2025–2026 season begins with a prefixed, alternating list of names, starting with Alice.
  • The naming will be coordinated through the Grupo Suroeste Storm Naming program with Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Andorra.
  • Aemet says the measure aims to improve public messaging, bolster preparedness and post-event analysis, and prevent the term DANA from being automatically linked to catastrophe.
