Aemet to Name Only the Most Severe DANAs, Starting With ‘Alice’

Names will be applied when forecasters expect orange or red warnings under a list coordinated with European partners.

Overview

  • Aemet expands its Storm Naming practice to upper-level low systems, reserving names for high-impact DANAs to sharpen public communication.
  • The policy uses a pre-agreed list of 20 alternating male and female names for the 2025–2026 season, with the first name set as Alice.
  • Naming is limited to episodes forecast to generate major impacts, which in Spain corresponds to orange or red alerts for hazardous weather.
  • The move is coordinated within the Group Suroeste of EUMETNET, alongside the national meteorological services of Portugal, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Andorra.
  • DANAs are complex upper-atmosphere depressions that can be hard to predict and do not always cause severe effects, a nuance officials stress after last October’s deadly event in Valencia.
