Aemet to Name High-Impact DANAs Starting 2025–26, Beginning With 'Alice'

Only episodes expected to trigger orange or red warnings will be named to sharpen public messaging.

Overview

  • The move extends Spain’s participation in Europe’s storm‑naming scheme, which Aemet has joined since 2017 for high‑impact storms.
  • Names will be drawn from a 20‑name list agreed by the Southwest Europe group of meteorological services and will alternate masculine and feminine.
  • Aemet says the practice is intended to improve risk communication, support preparedness and response by administrations, and facilitate post‑event studies.
  • DANAs are mid‑ and upper‑level low‑pressure systems whose impacts depend on additional factors such as humid, warm Mediterranean air, and they are difficult to predict.
  • The policy responds to renewed catastrophic associations with the term after last October’s deadly DANA in Valencia that killed more than 220 people.
