Adults With Down Syndrome and CHD Match Peers in Employment, Lead in Volunteering, Study Finds

Researchers frame the findings as groundwork for tailored long-term care.

Overview

  • In a sample of 287 adults with Down syndrome, including 104 with congenital heart disease, participants with both conditions reported quality of life comparable to peers without CHD.
  • Employment rates were nearly identical for those with CHD versus those without at 61% and 60%, respectively.
  • Volunteer participation was higher among adults with CHD at 32% compared with 19% for those without CHD.
  • Despite a higher prevalence of neurologic problems in the CHD group, reported community engagement did not differ adversely.
  • The MUSC-led study, conducted through the Pediatric Heart Network using REDCap questionnaires, was published in Pediatric Cardiology (2025; DOI: 10.1007/s00246-025-03979-2).
