ADR Says Regional Parties' FY24 Income Jumps 46% as Electoral Bonds Dominate

The analysis highlights prolonged audit lapses on the ECI site that cloud visibility into party finances.

Overview

  • Forty regional parties declared ₹2,532.09 crore in FY 2023-24, with ₹1,796.02 crore—over 70%—sourced through electoral bonds.
  • The largest earners were BRS (₹685.51 crore), TMC (₹646.39 crore), BJD (₹297.81 crore), TDP (₹285.07 crore) and YSR Congress (₹191.04 crore), together accounting for 83.17% of the total.
  • SBI data obtained via RTI shows ₹4,507.56 crore in electoral bonds were redeemed in FY24, with national parties taking 55.998% (₹2,524.14 crore) and regional parties 39.84% (₹1,796.02 crore).
  • Audit reports for 20 regional parties were missing from the ECI website 313 days past the deadline, and the remaining filings came 12–216 days late.
  • Financial positions diverged: 27 parties reported surpluses (BRS ₹430.60 crore unspent; TMC ₹414.92 crore; BJD ₹253.79 crore), while 12 overspent, including YSR Congress at nearly 55% above income.
