ADP Says U.S. Private Payrolls Rose 42,000 in October

With BLS releases delayed by the shutdown, economists describe ADP’s sample-based tally as a provisional signal.

Overview

  • The October gain outpaced forecasts, which had called for roughly 28,000 to 37,500 new private-sector jobs.
  • ADP revised September’s drop to 29,000 from a previously reported 32,000, following August’s small decline.
  • Year-over-year pay growth stayed unchanged at 4.5% for job-stayers and 6.7% for job-changers, according to ADP Pay Insights.
  • Education and health care and trade, transportation and utilities added jobs, while professional and business services, information, and leisure and hospitality shed positions.
  • ADP’s report draws on payroll data for more than 26 million private workers, yet economists stress it can diverge from the BLS count, which remains delayed during the shutdown.
