Adhikari Alleges KMC Is Mass-Issuing Birth Certificates to Shield Voters During Roll Revision

The charge presses the Election Commission during an active voter-roll revision in West Bengal.

Overview

  • Suvendu Adhikari accused Kolkata Municipal Corporation of issuing birth certificates to “suspicious” people at risk of deletion during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
  • He filed an RTI and wrote to Municipal Commissioner Sumit Gupta seeking comparative issuance data for October 6–November 5 in 2025 and 2024, including late registrations and non-resident cases.
  • Adhikari urged the Election Commission to probe what he called an attempt to manipulate the rolls, citing the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
  • KMC Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh rejected the allegation as baseless, saying certificates are issued within law for births recorded within KMC jurisdiction and that information will be provided to Adhikari.
  • The Trinamool Congress dismissed the claim as “preposterous,” as the ECI’s SIR enumeration proceeds in 12 states and UTs including West Bengal.
