ADFC Ranks Erlangen and Neuried Most Bicycle-Friendly, Highlights Gaps in Dachau’s Cycling Infrastructure

Supported by the federal transport ministry, the biennial survey polled 213,000 riders on safety, infrastructure and comfort across German municipalities.

Overview

  • Erlangen topped cities of 100,000–200,000 residents with an average score of 3.13, crediting its ‘Zukunftsplan Fahrradstadt’, an axes network and the ‘1000-Bügel-Programm’ for enhancing cycling infrastructure.
  • Neuried achieved first place among Bavarian municipalities under 20,000 inhabitants with a grade of three, driven by a municipal mobility concept and improved access to its town centre.
  • Dachau registered a middling score of 3.85, with 64% of cyclists feeling unsafe and 86% calling bike lanes too narrow.
  • Supported by the federal transport ministry, the biennial test surveyed roughly 213,000 cyclists last autumn on safety, infrastructure, traffic climate and rider satisfaction.
  • Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder praised winning municipalities for effective local measures and urged continued expansion of bike networks nationwide.
