ADAC Warns of Major Return-Traffic Jams in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg Sept. 12–14

Longer waits are expected due to diversion bans, construction zones, plus reinforced border checks.

Overview

  • Motoring clubs forecast a pronounced return wave as school holidays end, with the heaviest congestion risk on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, and elevated volumes through Sunday.
  • ADAC highlights key bottlenecks on south–north corridors, especially the A8 at the Albabstieg and between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, along with trouble spots on the A5, A6, A7, A9 and A93.
  • Bavaria will impose temporary no-through rules along sections flanking the A8 and A93 from Friday to Sunday, keeping diversion traffic off local roads during motorway jams.
  • Delays are likely to increase due to more than 1,200 lane-reducing construction sites nationwide and reinforced border controls that can cause longer waits.
  • Experts advise avoiding the weekend if possible by traveling Tuesday or Wednesday, departing very early or late, using live-traffic apps, and generally staying on the autobahn unless a jam is very long or there is a full closure.
