ADAC Survey: One in Five Primary Pupils Driven to School Daily in Germany

Practical constraints, not safety fears, drive most rides.

Overview

  • An ADAC Foundation–commissioned survey of 1,000 parents with children aged 5 to 15 found that 19% of primary-school pupils are driven to school every day.
  • A further 9% are driven every second day, underscoring how routine parent drop-offs remain.
  • Only 12% of parents cite safety as the reason for driving, while 40% point to after-school appointments, 30% say the school is on their commute, 22% seek time savings, and 32% mention bad weather.
  • Fifty-eight percent of parents say they do not drive their children, mainly where walking, cycling or using a scooter is feasible.
  • The ADAC Foundation calls the complete elimination of parent drop-offs unrealistic, and board member Christina Tillmann urges encouraging independent school journeys to build traffic skills and autonomy.
