ADAC Study Finds Uneven Late‑Night Transit and Faulty Timetable Data in German Cities

The review warns that pre‑midnight gaps hinder under‑18s, with inconsistent online information obscuring available options.

Overview

  • Testing 100 connections across 20 cities, ADAC assessed weekend travel from city centers to five youth‑focused suburbs in two late‑night windows.
  • Only 12 cities could reach all five destinations between 23:30 and 00:30, the window most relevant for teenagers heading home.
  • Roughly half of the cities delivered good to very good service, including Leipzig, Mannheim, Augsburg, Bremen, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt am Main.
  • Lübeck, Osnabrück, Potsdam and Erfurt ranked lowest due to limited or patchy links to surrounding areas, with Potsdam struggling especially before midnight.
  • Bielefeld, Magdeburg and Rostock were excluded after existing connections failed to appear in electronic searches, and ADAC found unreliable timetable data and poor on‑demand integration in 13 of 20 cities.
