Overview
- ADAC President Christian Reinicke is urging lawmakers to shift the legal requirement for stations to offer E5 over to Super E10 to leverage its higher bioethanol content.
- Super E10 contains up to 10 percent bioethanol, is roughly six cents cheaper per liter than E5, and is compatible with most vehicles built since 2011.
- Despite its advantages, Super E10 captured just 27.4 percent of domestic petrol sales in 2022, while E5 retained a 67.5 percent market share, according to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control.
- The Bundesverband Freier Tankstellen and Wirtschaftsverband Fuels und Energie back ending the E5 obligation to free up capacity for greener fuels such as renewable HVO diesel.
- Drawing on Austria’s experience of dropping E5 requirements without disruption, the ADAC says broader E10 adoption would boost cost savings for drivers and environmental benefits.
