ADAC Finds Autobahn Fuel About €0.33 a Litre More Expensive Nationwide

The full census shows wide regional and station gaps that can add roughly €16–21 to a 50‑litre fill, prompting ADAC to advise drivers to exit the motorway to use cheaper nearby stations.

Overview

  • In early July the ADAC published a nationwide full census that used MTS‑K price data from 6–19 April and compared more than 14,000 stations, including roughly 360 autobahn service sites.
  • The study found Super E10 and Diesel cost on average about €0.33 per litre more at autobahn stations, which equates to roughly €16.50 extra for a 50‑litre tank.
  • Average litre prices in the measurement window were about €2.43 for Super E10 and €2.61 for Diesel on the autobahn versus about €2.10 and €2.28 off the motorway.
  • Price gaps vary sharply by state and by station, with the largest state gaps in Rheinland‑Pfalz (~€0.42–€0.43/l), big spreads in the south, and extreme differences of up to ~€0.48–€0.50 between the cheapest and most expensive autobahn pumps.
  • ADAC credits higher concession costs, 24/7 service and weaker local competition for autobahn markups, reports that 63% of drivers would leave the motorway to save, and recommends planning stops and using price‑comparison apps since the result holds despite April price turbulence and the later temporary tankrabatt.
