ADAC Analysis Reveals Severe Imbalance in Europe’s EV Charging Infrastructure

The August ranking highlights dense coverage in leading markets contrasted by long gaps across Southeast Europe.

Overview

  • ADAC’s August 14 study of Lemnet data ranks 30 countries by public charging points per 100 road kilometres, placing Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany at the top.
  • Parts of Southeast Europe such as Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania remain thinly served, with Greece accounting for only about 2,000 public charging points overall.
  • Germany reports roughly 170,000 public charging points as of July 1, 2025, but its network is strongest in urban centres and main corridors, leaving rural interiors unevenly covered.
  • Varied payment methods, parking rules and environmental requirements across borders complicate long-distance EV travel, prompting ADAC to urge precise route and payment planning using ADAC Maps, ADAC Drive and third-party apps.
  • Operators and regulators have introduced roaming tariffs, fast-charging hubs and price-transparency tools to address gaps, but many off-corridor and rural areas still lack reliable charging access.
