Activists Throw Red Paint on Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia in Climate Protest

Futuro Vegetal says the action denounces government inaction on a climate crisis it links to deadly August wildfires.

Overview

  • Two members of the Futuro Vegetal collective sprayed red paint on the base of a Sagrada Familia column and were detained by security.
  • A video posted by the group shows the activists shouting “Justice climatique” as they carry out the action.
  • In a communiqué, the group said it used colored powder to accuse several governments of complicity in this summer’s Iberian wildfires.
  • Futuro Vegetal cited a Ministry of Agriculture figure claiming 70% of forest fires are caused by livestock and criticized ongoing subsidies to that sector.
  • Spain’s government has linked August’s fires, which killed four people and burned more than 350,000 hectares, to climate change, a backdrop to the protest.
