Overview

  • The Madleen set sail from Catania on June 1 with 12 international activists and supplies including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, sanitary products, water desalination kits and medical equipment.
  • On June 6 the crew responded to a Frontex alert and rescued four Sudanese migrants fleeing the Libyan coastguard, bringing them safely aboard.
  • Israel has warned it will intercept any vessel attempting to breach its Gaza blockade, which has been in place since 2007 and tightened after October 2023 hostilities.
  • In May the Freedom Flotilla’s previous ship, Conscience, was struck by Israeli drones off Malta, illustrating the risks faced by aid missions.
  • The World Food Programme warns Gaza faces imminent famine as 2.3 million people are acutely malnourished and one in five Palestinians teeter on the brink of starvation.
