Active Mexican Volcano Threatens Mass Evacuation, Disrupts Travel

  • The Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico has been spewing ash and smoke, prompting authorities to raise the alert level and warn millions of residents to prepare for possible evacuations.
  • Ash from the volcano has caused disruptions in the area, including temporary shutdowns of Mexico City’s two main airports and closures of schools and medical centers.
  • About 25 million people live in a 60-mile radius of the volcano, and authorities would consider evacuating 3.5 million people living in 30 municipalities in “high” and “medium” risk areas around the volcano in case of eruption.
  • Mexican authorities have warned residents who live near the volcano to take precautions such as wearing masks, glasses, and long sleeves to protect them from volcanic ash, and to study evacuation routes.
  • Small domes of lava continued forming inside the crater that were then being destroyed by small and moderate explosions.
