Accused New Orleans Daycare Carjacker Dies Days After Being Found Shot in Stolen Car

Investigators are working to determine who shot Raymond Wells as the coroner prepares an autopsy.

Overview

  • Carl Morgan, 36, a Brennan’s sous chef, was fatally shot during a Sept. 30 carjacking while picking up his child at the Abeona House Child Discovery Center in Mid-City.
  • Police tracked Morgan’s stolen vehicle using automatic license-plate readers to I-10 near the Bonnabel exit in Metairie, where suspect Raymond Wells, 21, was found with a head wound and later died at a hospital.
  • NOPD said Wells would have faced a first-degree murder charge if he survived, and the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office is set to conduct an autopsy.
  • Detectives are reviewing accounts that Wells fired at bystanders and vehicles near Bienville Street and are investigating whether anyone shot back.
  • Wells’ family says he struggled with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and had stopped taking medication, as the community honors Morgan with memorials, fundraising and added security at the daycare.
