Accidental Blast at Srinagar Police Station Kills 9 During Handling of Seized Explosives

Officials say the detonation happened during forensic sampling of explosive material brought from Faridabad.

Overview

  • J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat and the Ministry of Home Affairs termed the explosion accidental and said speculation about other causes is unnecessary.
  • The blast occurred around 11:20 pm as a joint team of police, Forensic Science Laboratory staff and revenue officials sampled part of a cache stored at the station.
  • Those killed include one State Investigation Agency member, three FSL personnel, two revenue officials, two crime photographers and a tailor, with 32 others injured, mostly police.
  • Secondary explosions impeded bomb-disposal and rescue efforts, severely damaging the Nowgam police station and affecting nearby buildings and vehicles.
  • The materials under examination were drawn from Faridabad seizures linked to an alleged ‘white‑collar’ module that yielded roughly 2,900 kg of explosive precursors, and the cordoned site is under further forensic examination.
