ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips indicates that as conference expands with the addition of Cal, SMU and Stanford next season, not all teams may qualify for the annual basketball championship, sparking concern among coaches and undermining long-standing tradition.
- ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has suggested that not all teams may be invited to the 2024-2025 conference tournament due to the expansion of the league next season with the addition of Cal, SMU, and Stanford.
- Phillips indicated that the traditional postseason flow that works for teams, fans, and venues could be disrupted with an additional day to accommodate all the teams, hence some teams may not make the cut.
- Virginia Tech coach Mike Young expressed surprise and concern over the possibility of some of the Atlantic Coast Conference teams not being included in the ACC tournament.
- The suggested changes could make ACC join the MAC as conferences that do not feature every school in their tournament. Currently, all 15 basketball teams qualify for the men's and women's tournaments in the ACC.
- The ACC Commissioner has stated that the conference is working on many issues that will affect the larger league such as travel to the San Francisco Bay Area and Dallas-Fort Worth. He confirmed that the conference will listen to the members and do as per their wishes.
