Academy to Replace Hattie McDaniel's Missing Oscar with New Statuette, Gift It to Howard University

Hattie McDaniel was the first Black Oscar winner for her role in Gone with the Wind in 1940.
Her original best supporting actress Oscar went missing decades ago after she bequeathed it to Howard University.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will gift Howard a replacement Oscar statuette on October 1.
The new gold statuette will be presented at a ceremony titled "Hattie's Come Home" at Howard's Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.
The ceremony will celebrate McDaniel's historic achievement and legacy as the first Black Oscar winner.
