Overview

  • The Jornadas Conmemorativas will run at Donceles 66 from September 2 to 11, opening at 11:00 on September 2 with Gonzalo Celorio, Concepción Company Company, Adolfo Castañón and Liliana Weinberg, followed by a recital from cellist Carlos Prieto.
  • A sesquicentennial closing on September 11 will feature remote remarks by RAE director and ASALE president Santiago Muñoz Machado and ASALE secretary general Francisco Javier Pérez, with UNAM rector Leonardo Lomelí and AML director Gonzalo Celorio attending in person.
  • All sessions will be livestreamed on the AML’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, with recordings available afterward.
  • Panels will address the academy’s past, present and future, literary creation, Mexico’s indigenous languages, clear and accessible language, and the challenge of defining an official language, plus a tribute to Joaquín García Icazbalceta.
  • After an 88% budget cut since 2019, the AML cites austerity, asset sales and private support such as Fundación Kaluz to sustain operations, notes that all 36 chairs are filled with increased female participation, and adds related events at FILUNI on August 30 and an Ofunam concert on October 4.
