Overview
- DCT Abu Dhabi formally launched Dar Al Funoon and confirmed construction has begun in late June 2026, with the venue scheduled to open in 2030.
- The complex will house a multipurpose main hall of more than 2,000 seats with an orchestra pit for up to 120 musicians, a 3,500‑seat outdoor amphitheatre, a 400‑seat studio theatre and a 250‑seat jazz venue, giving a combined capacity of over 6,000.
- Officials say the building will operate year‑round as a technically advanced performing arts centre able to stage opera, ballet, theatre, orchestral concerts, musicals and festivals.
- The project was commissioned by DCT Abu Dhabi and designed by Gehry Partners based on Frank Gehry’s designs, with a billowing, transparent façade meant to reflect local landscape rhythms and invite public engagement.
- DCT frames Dar Al Funoon as part of Saadiyat Island’s cultural expansion alongside the Louvre and the forthcoming Guggenheim, with aims to boost cultural tourism, create jobs, expand education and host international co‑productions and long‑term residencies.
