Abu Dhabi Inaugurates Natural History Museum Ahead of Nov. 22 Public Opening

The 35,000-square-metre institution blends headline specimens with active research to tell Earth’s story through an Arabian lens.

Overview

  • Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed inaugurated the museum, with Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed touring the galleries and a VIP preview drawing celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.
  • Doors open to the public on Saturday, November 22, with tickets priced at Dh70 for adults and free entry for under-18s and people of determination; weekday hours run 10am–6.30pm and weekends 10am–8.30pm.
  • World-first displays include a herd of sauropods in the atrium and two Tyrannosaurus rexes shown in combat, alongside star specimens such as 67-million-year-old Stan, a 7-billion-year-old meteorite and a 25-metre blue whale skeleton.
  • Galleries foreground the Arabian Peninsula’s natural history, including a recreation of Abu Dhabi’s Late Miocene savannah, and the museum houses labs supporting research in palaeontology, marine biology, molecular studies and earth sciences.
  • Designed by Mecanoo to echo Saadiyat Island’s rock formations, the museum joins Louvre Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena in the Saadiyat Cultural District, with opening temporary shows on Triceratops and Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
