ABS 2024 Data Show Slight Drop in Queensland Crime as Sexual Assaults Hit Record

The figures intensify scrutiny of official claims because domestic and family violence is a major driver of rising assaults.

Overview

  • Queensland recorded 289,449 victims across nine offence categories in 2024, a marginal decline from 289,657 in 2023, according to the ABS.
  • Sexual assault victims in Queensland rose about 11% to 9,326, the highest number in the ABS’s 32-year series, while assault victims increased 5% to 61,644.
  • Nationally, police recorded 40,087 sexual assault victim-survivors in 2024, up roughly 10% year on year and the highest rate in more than two decades.
  • Victim numbers for offences commonly linked to youth crime fell in Queensland in 2024, with robbery down about 7%, unlawful entry down about 9%, and motor vehicle theft down about 4%.
  • Debate over progress has sharpened after the state promoted a separate half-year dataset that excluded the large 'other theft' category, as experts note ABS assault data collection began in 2022 and a high share of assaults are related to family and domestic violence.
