Above-Average Monsoon Drives 4.1% Rise in India’s Summer Crop Sowing

Rainfall 6% above normal since June 1 has boosted soil moisture to support expanded planting across major crops.

  • Rice paddy acreage jumped 12.4% to 17.67 million hectares after an increase in support prices.
  • Corn planting rose to 7.1 million hectares year-on-year while soybean sowing, at 11.17 million hectares, accelerated in the last week but remains below 2024 levels.
  • Pulses area climbed 2.3% year-on-year to 8.2 million hectares, while cotton acreage remained 3.4% below last year at 9.86 million hectares despite recent gains.
  • Telangana’s kharif sowing reached 61.10 lakh acres by July 16, trailing both last year’s 61.63 lakh and the normal 66.42 lakh acres.
  • Reservoirs in Telangana held 592.20 tmc ft of water as of mid-July, more than double the level recorded a year earlier and bolstering irrigation prospects.
