Abhishek Banerjee Presses ECI on SIR in North Bengal, Pledges Rs 300 Wage for Tea Workers

The Alipurduar stop of his 19-day tour blends a voter-roll challenge with targeted outreach to workers in BJP-leaning north Bengal.

Overview

  • At a rally in Alipurduar, the TMC leader dubbed Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar “Vanish Kumar,” alleging eligible voters are being removed under the Special Intensive Revision of rolls.
  • He promised to raise tea garden workers’ daily pay from Rs 250 to Rs 300 if the TMC returns to power, saying a tripartite meeting would be convened quickly to start the process within days.
  • Banerjee took questions from representatives of 61 tea gardens and pledged operational primary health centres, more creches and student buses, and action on provident fund dues and land patta concerns.
  • At the campaign launch in Baruipur a day earlier, he presented three living people he said were listed as deceased in draft rolls, after which the Election Commission sought a report from the District Electoral Officer.
  • West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya rejected the allegations, defended the Election Commission and urged the TMC to seek legal remedy, noting SIR is underway in several states.
