Abbott Orders Statewide Removal of Nonstandard Road Markings, Threatens Funding Penalties

The directive uses TxDOT’s funding leverage to enforce federal-style uniformity under July’s SAFE ROADS guidance.

Overview

  • TxDOT told local governments to remove symbols, flags and decorative crosswalks that do not directly support traffic control or safety, giving 30 days to comply.
  • The agency said its Traffic Safety Division may issue written exceptions based on a demonstrated safety benefit or compelling justification.
  • Abbott warned noncompliant jurisdictions could face withheld or denied state and federal road funding as well as suspended agreements with TxDOT.
  • Cities with rainbow crosswalks, including Houston, Austin and San Antonio, could be affected; Houston’s METRO said local dollars funded the recent Montrose restriping.
  • Florida set the precedent this week as FDOT crews removed Miami Beach’s 2018 rainbow crosswalk after the city’s appeal was denied, replacing it with standard pavement.
