Abbott Orders Cy-Fair ISD to End Any Ties to 2026 Islamic Games, Threatens Investigation

Cy-Fair ISD says no 2026 facility agreement exists.

Overview

  • In a Jan. 21 letter, Gov. Greg Abbott told board president Julie Hinaman and Superintendent Douglas Killian to terminate any dealings with the Houston Islamic Games, preserve related records, and confirm compliance within seven days or face a Texas Education Agency inquiry and possible legal action by Attorney General Ken Paxton.
  • Abbott cites his November 2025 proclamation labeling CAIR a terrorist organization and alleges CAIR-New Jersey sponsorship of the event at district facilities.
  • CFISD says it is not hosting the 2026 games, has no facility-use agreements for the 2026–27 school year, and applies neutral GKD (LOCAL) rental rules used for roughly 13,000 hours of community use in 2024–25.
  • Event organizers and CAIR deny any CAIR-New Jersey sponsorship, while the Islamic Games website lists fall 2026 Houston dates and Sprague Middle School even as CFISD says reservations for that school year cannot be made until Aug. 1.
  • Grapevine-Colleyville ISD canceled a planned Islamic Games event earlier this week citing the governor’s designation, and CAIR with the Muslim Legal Fund is pursuing a federal challenge to Abbott’s proclamation.
