Abandoned Golden Retriever Puppies in Boston Test Positive for Parvovirus

Big Red is expected to be cleared for adoption within about 10 days.

Overview

  • Boston Animal Control recovered three puppies near Geneva Avenue in Dorchester on August 23, and all tested positive for parvovirus.
  • Two pups were hospitalized in isolation at Angell West in Waltham for six days and are now in foster care to complete recovery.
  • The third puppy, Big Red, is finishing treatment for parvovirus and gastrointestinal parasites and will be adopted through the MSPCA once cleared.
  • MSPCA Law Enforcement and Boston Animal Control are investigating the dogs’ history after no owner came forward, and officials believe they were abandoned.
  • The MSPCA is urging vaccination against the highly contagious virus, noting upcoming community clinics in September and October and vaccine availability at Angell hospitals.
