Aaron Judge Returns to Right Field for First Time Since July as Yankees Face Blue Jays

The Yankees will manage his workload by alternating right field with Giancarlo Stanton during a tight AL East chase.

Overview

  • A month after a right-elbow flexor strain limited him to DH, Judge started in right field on Sept. 5 to open the series against Toronto.
  • Aaron Boone said Judge will not play defense every day initially and plans to split right-field duties with Stanton.
  • In his first game back in the field, Judge made cautious throws, including a 67.9 mph relay per Statcast, and passed on a potential throw home on a bases-loaded single.
  • Judge entered the night leading MLB in batting average (.322), home runs (43) and RBIs (97), though he hit .242/.415/.474 in 27 games as a full-time DH since Aug. 5.
  • Anthony Volpe was held out of the opener with José Caballero starting at shortstop, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the lineup a day after knee contusions as New York began the series three games behind Toronto.
